In 1954, in a case called Brown v. Topeka Board of Education, the Supreme Court ordered that all schools in the United States integrate. This story takes place nine years later, in 1963. How is it possible that schools in Mississippi still were not integrated, so many years after the Supreme Court order?

In chapter 9, Addie Ann talks about the white swimming pool in Kuckachoo. (There was no “Negro swimming pool” in her town.) Separate swimming pools and separate schools are examples of Jim Crow Laws that were passed throughout the country. Another Jim Crow Law that existed in many states required separate waiting rooms in bus stations and train stations.
Shana Burg went to visit the Dixie Greyhound Bus Station in Greenwood, Mississippi. It is no longer in operation, but the building has been preserved by a historic society called Main Street Greenwood.
